Out To Save The World

In 1971, a caravan of 60 brightly painted school buses and assorted other vehicles carrying more than 300 hippie idealists landed on an abandoned farm in central Tennessee. They had a mission: to be a part of something bigger than themselves, to follow a peaceful and spiritual path, and to make a difference in the world.

Today The Farm is one of the largest and longest-lasting intentional communities in the United States. The Farm continues as a school of change, demonstrating ways to operate collectively in terms of:

Circle of Children Village School

Circle of Children has recently moved to Triangle Lake in the Oregon Coastal Mountains. We were donated 60 acres on lake front property in January 2012. There are many buildings existing on the land currently. Historically it was a religious kids camp. The camp was build between the years 1991 and 2003. Circle of Children Village School is a free school that teaches youth and their families sustainable living skills while also weaving in the basic subjects.

Earthaven is an aspiring ecovillage founded in 1994 on 320 acres in the mountain forests of western North Carolina, about 40 minutes from Asheville. We value sustainable ecological systems, permaculture design, spiritual diversity, right livelihood, and healthy social relations. We are off the grid and live in passive-solar natural-built homes in 13 small neighborhoods. Now (in 2007) we have 60 members, and intend to have 160 maximum. We welcome families with children, older people, young people.

1) Each member has an acre of land chosen from the 10 acres we currently have to use as a place to build, garden, and live.

2) We have a community kitchen in the main house. This is where all community meals are prepared and served.

“La Cite Ecologique of NH” Ecovillage was establishe in 2003. The community of 35-40 members is surrounded by 315 acres of beautiful land, forest and mountains. We are a cohousing community (condominium legal structure) designed for 14 households (currently 10 built and occupied) on a working, profit-making, organic Christmas tree farm. Our modular houses have a maximum 1000 sq. footprint, high insulation, energy star appliances. The passive solar, partially earth-bermed design is enhanced by PV (3.3 kW average per house), solar domestic hot water, and high-efficiency natural gas boilers. Our on-site waste water treatment sends our blackwater through a greenhouse artifical wetland to return gray water for flushing.

The Tui Land Trust was formed in 1984 to create an intentional community village for holistic living. Most of the buildings are partially solar, with mains electricity. Closeness to the land and support of families and personal growth is encouraged. No specific religious or political creed is followed. Individuals contributes to community running and development costs and are responsible for earning income. One daily meal is shared. A large communal garden produces food for the community. Stream water is sourced for buildings.

Sawyer Hill EcoVillage includes two cohousing groups: Mosaic Commons and Camelot Cohousing. We're in Berlin, MA, about an hour west of Boston. Both cohousings have 34 units each, and both have market-rate and affordable units for sale. This site is very rural, but all of the facilities of a big city (shopping, doctors, hospitals, entertainment, etc.) are less than 20 minutes away.

Clearwater Commons is an intergenerational residential community, ranging from small children to grandparents. Members share an intention of living a lifestyle that sustains a balance between individual and community needs and the natural ecosystem.

Clearwater Commons began forming in June 2006 when a group of families purchased a 7.4 acre site on North Creek, 11 miles north of Seattle, WA city limits. The site includes wetlands, wooded spaces, and a salmon stream. As of May 2012 there are five completed and occupied homes, a common shop and a 300sf passive guest house.

ALOHA:cinderland ecovillage was founded on the remains of the 1960 kapoho lava flow on the big Island of Hawaii. The land was buried with lava and then with Cinders. The cinders was mined and sold to the public and the land layed wasted, baren and empty until we purchased it in 2ooo. We implimented perma culture technics and planted nitrogin fixing trees extensibly. We composted all of our organic waste and brought in cinders, mulch, horse manure, soil,green waste, saw dust and plenty of organic foods eating humans to co create this wonderful paradise we call home, Cinderland.
