GEN at United Nations
Side Events and more
UN Commission on Sustainable Development:
GEN offered side events at CSD meetings in NYC in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
In 2004 our side event was entitled, Implementing an Integrated, Multi-Sectoral Approach to Community Based Development: the Ecovillage Model. GEN also provided panelists for a UNITAR side event and co-sponsored with the Values Caucus a side event in which a number of Ambassadors were invited to discuss the relevance of the Earth Charter with some of its authors. GEN delegate Rob Wheeler was interviewed on a UNDP video production about GEN and the EcoEarth Alliance Partnership Initiative. See: www.un.org/webcast
On several occasions GEN has provided special guest speakers for DPI/NGO Weekly Briefings, including:
June 2001: Michael Shaw gave a powerpoint presentation illustrating the ecovillage model of sustainable development at a Briefing on Habitat
October 2003: John Todd gave a powerpoint presentation on environmentally sustainable approaches to freshwater treatment at the Briefing as part of a Day on Water GEN co-sponsored with the Values Caucus a monthly series during the winter and spring of 2001 on Practical Solutions for a Sustainable Future. The series included presentations by John Clausen on Indicators of Sustainability and The Hydrogen Economy and an illustrated presentation by Michael Shaw on the concepts of Ecological Design and the Ecological Footprint.
"Coffee Meetings":
GEN has helped to organize a popular ongoing series of morning coffee meetings with individual ambassadors from numerous countries, including UK, China, Brazil, South Africa, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Lesotho, Iran, Finland, etc. These events feature informal discussions on values important to their countries, including sustainable development, and exploring more effective ways for NGOs to collaborate with the UN and Member States.
