Gaia Villages

Gaia Villages is a division of Gaia Trust and concentrates its efforts on supporting sustainable settlements and projects based on ecovillage design.

Gaia Villages has supported reports, courses and conferences about ecovillages and permaculture as well as co-founding a Danish association called The Danish Association of Sustainable Communities.

Support has been given to ecovillage projects, as well as a network of ecovillages in Australia, Scotland, Germany, Hungary, Denmark, USA and Russia. Gaia Villages is working with this Ecovillage network to develop international programmes for the support and networking of ecovillage projects globally.

Gaia Village Initiatives

Society's existing laws, mentality, administration, research, financial structures are not geared toward supporting the development of eco-villages. There is, therefore, a great need for support in establishing pioneer projects that can serve as examples to others. The most important task of Gaia Villages is, therefore, to support the many initiatives that seek to find and forge the path toward sustainable communities and to support the development of technologies that enhance this new structure.

In Denmark, Gaia Villages supports the operations of The Danish Association of Sustainable Communities LØS. This association represents social, ecological and spiritual communities, as well as individuals who wish to promote sustainable development. Among other things, the association lobbies to remove the barriers which hinder the development of the eco-village movement.

Internationally, Gaia Villages has taken the initiative in supporting selected permaculture courses. The goal is to strengthen individual projects, which can serve as examples for others.

Permaculture

Permaculture (permanent agriculture ) is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter and other material and non material needs in a sustainable way. Without permanent agriculture there is no possibility of a stable social order.

Gaia Villages has supported permaculture courses in selected countries because this curriculum, which includes the design of sustainable communities, can often be the first step in the founding of an eco-village.
